i was walking around out back on my lunch break today. there's a fenced in ditch for runoff water and it's home to a whole clutch of water reeds. i went out to stand in the sun and noticed there were birds down there. i started circling the ditch following the birds who were nervously darting through the reeds trying to hide. i wondered why they were so afraid of me since i was so far away from them. then i realized...

they don't know i can't fly. birds, aren't that smart really, well not these types anyway, and as far as they know i'm about to come after them.

it made me think of what assumptions people might have about me that makes them treat me in certain ways and keeps them from approaching me or understanding me.

which made me think of what assumptions i have about other people which keep me from approaching them, befriending them, and giving them a fair chance. there are so many people who have many things to teach me and i'm afraid i'll walk away from the teacher before he or she can begin the lesson.

so here's to lowering my gaurd and taking deep breathes.

Since I moved to Seattle I've developed a habit of talking to strangers on buses and in lines, and I've learned all sorts of new things as a result.
So cheers to this!
